I Know You Are But What Am I? (I Have A Doubt)

I love to retort "I know you are, but what am I?"

It got me through MANY a schoolyard taunts.  That and walking away from said taunts and pretending I was a character on the stage or screen.

But right now I am wondering - What Am I?

I met with some cool people today on a project and at the end of our meeting I mentioned that I was in graduate school.  Marvelous Marvin didn't skip a beat and said "Oh - have you figured out what you want to be when you grow up?"

He wasn't taunting me.
He was sincerely curious.

I responded, "Geez, Marv, I am just trying to get through this meeting.....but I think I want to be a teacher."

He beamed.

"That is a good idea" was his response.  He was totally genuine.

But every step I take towards my Masters in Education makes me worried.  I love my professors and am inspired by the work I do but how can *I* make a difference in a system so daunting????

Seriously, folks.  This Eduction Thing is a mess.

sigh

But I believe in the Future.  How can you not??

Shout out to Dr. King who ALWAYS believed in the future of our Human Race.

I wish you were still here, Dr. King.

I wish I could hear how you feel about how things are going right now.

  1. The system is a mess and so are some families and even some kids and some schools. But truly tackling each day in such a way that kids learn something and have growth of some kind, that is what it is all about. And it happens all day long, each day when you teach. You will be amazing. In spite of the system.
Some good advice a previous adm once told me. Always remember that each parent is sending you the best child they have every day. Therefore you are in a lucky position, you are working with the best every day.

Naive, corny, but when I think of how I feel about my children, it is easy to see how true it is.

We can say to each other, 'I know you are but what am I' and we will be the same!

Life is learning and teaching. When you are able to do both, you are living! Don't doubt that you are making the right decision.

    Love you
